Aeropex: bone conduction headphones review

While headphones that isolate the madding crowd prevails, other models are designed to just the opposite: allow us to listen to the ambient sound to be aware of what is happening in our environment. The Aeropex, from the manufacturer AfterShokz, falls into this category of hearing aids that go against the current trend (and taken to the extreme thanks to bone conduction technology ). For example, the design for practicing sports, for example, running or cycling, with the certainty that you hear the cars that may pass by and other sounds that should perceive for safety.

Comfortable and sweat resistant

The Aeropex are made of titanium and therefore weigh very little: 0.9 ounces (26 grams). They design to rest on the ears with a rigid part that surrounds the nape. They feel light and comfortable, and due to their highly soft black silicone coating, they are enjoyable to the touch. Of that same material is the cover that they include to store them. This is a considerable size, but it will not be a problem if you keep it in a gym bag.

On the right side, in the rectangular area of the hearing aid behind the ear, are the buttons for adjusting the volume and turning them on. You can access the multifunction button from the left ear cup to control music playback and answer calls.

They are IP67 certified, so they resist sweat. What’s more, they are submersible up to 3.3 feet (one meter) for half an hour.

Excellent sound (with risk of tickling)

Bone conduction technology generates small vibrations transmitted through the cheekbones and goes directly to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrums, explains AfterShokz. This translates, according to our tests, to a crisp, clean sound that hears very clearly. As the manufacturer itself advises in the instructions, it only has one drawback: the headphones vibrate too much at high volume. And this produces an unpleasant tingling.

To talk on the phone, the Aeropex equip with double noise-canceling microphones. In tests we have done with calls, the headphones can do their job without a hitch.

If you want to take them on a trip and prefer not to hear someone talking or other noises, the box includes plugs that adapt quickly and isolate enough. You will not hear someone speaking typically. Also, when you put these earplugs on, curiously, the music is heard louder.

They connect to binary phones at the same time

If you stay one of the persons carrying two mobile phones with these headphones, you can answer calls from either of the two thanks to the multipoint pairing function. Therefore, it will not matter to which of the two cell phones you are called: after configuring this function, the Aeropex hearing aids will connect indistinctly to both.

Battery to spare for a marathon

The headphones charge with a cable via a magnetic connection. Sweat can interfere with the operation of this mechanism, according to the manufacturer. If this happens, the user will know it through an audible and visual alarm. The solution: dry the area so they can recharge without problems. Just in case one gets lost, the box includes two cables with a magnetic charging port.

The autonomy does not disappoint either: it lasts eight hours on a single charge. And if you sprint out of battery, they recharge in two hours.

Conclusion

The Aeropex model represents a qualitative leap in sound and lightness concerning the previous model of this pioneering firm in sports headphones with bone conduction technology. They design to listen to music and answer calls while you exercise and, at the same time, listen to outside noise. Song playback and other functions control once you learn the dynamics. But since it does not carry internal memory, you will have to accept the phone to practice sports.

You get comfortable headphones with excellent sound quality, resistant to sweat, and can train outdoors being aware of your surroundings. Of course, you must be watchful not to raise the volume too much so that vibrations do not bother you. Although outdoors at times, you may have no choice but to set it high to hear perfectly.
